Substance use is not a problem to be solved, but a solution that needs to be understood.
Because at a minimum,
recovery will have to do the same.
Unlike traditional approaches grounded in academic explanations for substance use (outsider's perspective), flipTheory is grounded in actual experience (insider's perspective)
Instead of treating individuals how we think they should recover (outsider's perspective), flip Theory discovers what they actually need from recovery.
Dr. Boyles has been in recovery from substance use for over 26 years and holds a PhD involving a grounded theory approach to addiction . Combined, these experiences provide a unique understanding and compassion for others who struggle with substance use.
Our culture and education heavily influence our perceptions
Effective understanding of a phenomenon is dependent upon its inverse or absence (flip) for meaning (i.e., light has no meaning in the absence of darkness)
When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change (Wayne Dyer)
